MASONIC CHARITY AT WORK A MASONIC SEMINAR AND INAUGURATION OF A RENOVATED SCHOOL BY LODGE COCHIN. – JUNE 2005 Following the great tragedy of the Tsunami in various parts of Southern India, the District Grand Lodge of Madras set to work immediately on relief measures in areas surrounding some of its Lodges. The Chellanam village in Cochin is in an area affected by the Tsunami. Our brethren of Lodge Cochin led by its Worshipful Master, Wor. Bro. Mathew Varghese and Secretary W Bro A I Kurian made arrangements for immediate relief there, by organizing rice, milk, drinking water to the victims. The Lodge, after a quick assessment, chose a badly affected Primary School in the area. Its roof had been blown away, the building damaged and toilet facilities appeared inadequate. With the concurrence of the State Government authorities, the Lodge brethren swung into action to set in motion repair work to the School and also to provide enhanced facilities. An estimate of about Rs. 5 lakhs was made for repairing the premises and the existing toilets as also providing additional ones. The opportunity was also utilised to renew the roof, replace the flooring etc. R W District Grand Master released a substantial part of the cost from out of contributions from Grand Charity, London specifically made for Tsunami relief. The renovation work was completed and the premises were inaugurated on the evening of Saturday, 4th June 2005. RWDGM was the Chief Guest with Hon’ble Mr. Dominic Presentation, the State Minister of Fisheries, presiding and inaugurating the renovated School. The Lodge also thought it fit to commemorate the momentous occasion earlier with a half-day Masonic Seminar on the topic, “Whither directing our Course?” on the morning of 4th June 2005 commencing at 10 a.m. at Hotel Casino, Cochin The Speakers for the Seminar were the R.W.D.G.M., W Bro Dr K K Varma, our Deputy District Grand Master and W Bro A.I. Kurian.
