History
In 1922, Wor. Bro. A. Y. G. Campbell ICS became the Rt Wor. The District Grand Master of Madras. His attitude, character and conduct outside as well inside the Lodges even during times of political stress and excitement effectively demonstrated how we could "steer the bark of this life over the seas of passion without quitting the helm of rectitude" and how we could promote brotherly Love, Relief and Truth in the midst of the differences of race, caste and creed. By 1927, the example set by Rt. Wor. A. Y. G. Campbell in the social relations between Europeans and Indians was so widely appreciated that a few zealous and farsighted brethren began earnestly to consider the idea of forming a Lodge which by following the example of Rt. Wor. A. Y. G. Campbell would promote better fraternal and friendly relations between Europeans and Indian Freemasons through free and frequent social contacts and mutual understanding and appreciation of each other's habits, manners and etiquette and which would, at the same time, be a fitting memorial to the greatness and goodness of Rt. Wor. A. Y. G. Campbell and to his invaluable services to Freemasonry in India. With that object in view, nineteen Indians and eleven European freemasons who had the advantage of residing fairly long in each other's native land and knowing each other's customs and manners and some of whom were of high standing and mature experience in the Craft, agreed to form a new Lodge and to "exert their best endeavours to diffuse the genuine principles of the Craft" and name it "The Archibald Campbell Lodge". A petition for a warrant of constitution was accordingly submitted by the founders to His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, the Most Wor. Grand Master of England. In the petition Wor. Bro. G. T. Boag, Wor. Bro. C. Kunhi Raman and Bro. Paul Appaswamy were nominated ot be the first Master, the first Senior Warden and the first Junior Warden of the Lodge respectively. The need for the formation of th Lodge was considered and certified by the Lodge of Perfect Unanimity No. 150 E.C., the oldest Lodge in Southern India, at its regular meeting held on 7th November 1927. The petition was forwarded to the Grand Secretary of The United Grand Lodge of England through the District Grand Lodge of Madras on 7th December 1927. |
